CA level four dancers to collaborate with Sam Kohler in December Dance Concert by Jamal Melancon The annual December Dance Concert at Lusher Elementary’s Goldring Center will include a piece choreographed by the CA level four dancers themselves, which will feature Sam Kohler, a CA level four orchestra student, playing his cello. Sam’s music at the December Dance concert will be music that was previously completely improvised. After Sam spoke to dance instructor Jay Hammons last year about his interest in the relationship between dance and music, Mr. Jay invited Sam to come to the dance studio and improvise with his cello while the dancers warmed up. During that warm up, Sam ended up creating what he will play at the December Dance concert. When expressing his interest in dance and music collaborations, Sam said, “The way it works with the music and the movements, it doesn’t work! They’re not synchronized. It’s like two completely different pieces. It’s really interesting counterpoint.” Due to the successful collaboration, Sam is now working with both Lucy Tucker and Judy Watts, CA level four dancers, on their senior projects. ”That stuff is pre-composed though, which is a different animal,” said Sam. * * * Judy Watts described the December and Spring dance concerts as bittersweet, since it will be the seniors’ last dance concerts at Lusher. She said the CA level four dancers’ own choreographed piece will highlight her and her peers as dancers and how well they have worked together. “There is no story, but there is development,” said Sam. “I think that has to do with us as a level, how we work with each other and how we’ve developed with each other from ninth grade to now,” Judy added. The CA level four dancers’ collaboration with Sam Kohler will be included in the annual December Dance Concert held at Lusher Elementary’s Goldring Center at 6:00 p.m.
