Two years ago, I organized a successful Indie GoGo campaign for a recording project called "Synchromy" with my group the Sam Kohler New Music Ensemble. Now I'm back with the follow up, "Synchromy No. 2," and this time I'll be heading to my home state of Montana to work with the Cascade String Quartet and my aunt Kate Kohler. The Cascade Quartet consists of the four principal string players from the Great Falls Symphony Orchestra: Mary Papoulis, Megan Karls, Maria Ritzenthaler, and Thaddeus Suits.

Sam Kohler New Music Ensemble PerformancesI have three upcoming performances with the Sam Kohler New Music Ensemble: -In March we'll play at St. Paul Lutheran -In April we'll play at the New Orleans Museum of Art -In May we'll play as part of the Trinity Artist Series at Trinity Episcopal Church When we get more specific dates we'll let you know. Film scoresI am composing two film scores this spring: Waiting Room, written and directed by Christian McClain, the acclaimed director of The Illuminaphonist (2012). The film will premiere at CAMALS Film Festival in May 2014 at the Prytania Theater in New Orleans. Another Day, written and directed by Cheyenne Ford, a good friend of mine and the dedicatee of the Fourth movement of Synchromy No. 1. The film will be entered in several film festival competitions. Both scores will be recorded by the Sam Kohler New Music Ensemble, with Another Day potentially featuring my aunt Kate Kohler, who is an incredible pianist and composer, on piano. Current PiecesI recently completed Synchromy No. 2 for Voice and String Quartet, featuring text written by Alfred Joseph (Mvts. I and II) and myself (Mvt. IV). I am incredibly excited about this work, and I hope to perform it with SKNME soon. A new orchestral work, titled Pictures of 227, is nearly complete. Electronic MusicI will be collaborating with Beau LeMaire and Jamie Koffler to create the music for Jerome White's new music video, "Lonesome Limits." The project will be produced by Luca Allesandrini, of "Fuhn-ad-icks" fame. I am working on a new album, "This Loss is Your Gain," with my electronic band Funk Adventure Experience. We will release the album sometime in 2014. Thank youThank you to all my fans and collaborators! Please help me out by sharing my music with your friends and keeping an eye out for news.

CA level four dancers to collaborate with Sam Kohler in December Dance Concert by Jamal Melancon The annual December Dance Concert at Lusher Elementary’s Goldring Center will include a piece choreographed by the CA level four dancers themselves, which will feature Sam Kohler, a CA level four orchestra student, playing his cello. Sam’s music at the December Dance concert will be music that was previously completely improvised. After Sam spoke to dance instructor Jay Hammons last year about his interest in the relationship between dance and music, Mr. Jay invited Sam to come to the dance studio and improvise with his cello while the dancers warmed up. During that warm up, Sam ended up creating what he will play at the December Dance concert. When expressing his interest in dance and music collaborations, Sam said, “The way it works with the music and the movements, it doesn’t work! They’re not synchronized. It’s like two completely different pieces. It’s really interesting counterpoint.” Due to the successful collaboration, Sam is now working with both Lucy Tucker and Judy Watts, CA level four dancers, on their senior projects. ”That stuff is pre-composed though, which is a different animal,” said Sam. * * * Judy Watts described the December and Spring dance concerts as bittersweet, since it will be the seniors’ last dance concerts at Lusher. She said the CA level four dancers’ own choreographed piece will highlight her and her peers as dancers and how well they have worked together. “There is no story, but there is development,” said Sam. “I think that has to do with us as a level, how we work with each other and how we’ve developed with each other from ninth grade to now,” Judy added. The CA level four dancers’ collaboration with Sam Kohler will be included in the annual December Dance Concert held at Lusher Elementary’s Goldring Center at 6:00 p.m. |
