A Dreamer's Waltz (Stephen Foster, Arr. Sam Kohler) (2012)
For String Orchestra and Choir
Commissioned by Dr. Marta Jurjevich
My orchestra director, Dr. Marta Jurjevich, approached me one day in September 2012 and asked me to compose an "ethnic medley." I thought for a while about what this could potentially mean, but then she suggested I look into Stephen Foster's music. This reminded me of "Beautiful Dreamer," and I immediately asked her if a Viennese Waltz counted as an ethnic music. She said yes, much to my relief. Looking further into the music of Stephen Foster, I found an old tune called "Come Where my Love Lies Dreaming." I used those two songs as the A and B themes of my waltz, and thus a Dreamer's Waltz was born!
The work was premiered on December 2, 2012 by the Lusher Charter School Orchestra and Choir, under the direction of Sam Kohler.
Special thanks to Marta Jurjevich and Beth Rota for all their help and support
