Synchromy No. 1 for Chamber Ensemble
Flute, Clarinet, Piano, Violin, Viola, Violoncello, Double Bass
Synchromy was an art movement in the early 20th-century, led by Americans Stanton MacDonald-Wright and Morgan Russell. Their concept was that color and music are very closely related, and that this could be interpreted through painting. When I first discovered the Synchromists, I realized that this could be interpreted through music as well. However, my intention is not to literally represent visual color through music. Rather, I attempted to convey emotions or scenes that I associate with the indicated color. I give no indication as to what these scenes or emotions are, because I believe that the form of Synchromy is so ambiguous that ultimately its meaning should be left to the interpretation of the listener.
